Excerpt from Film Reviews
My Dear Enemy
Ha, so creepy as the wily killer in “The Chaser,” is almost unrecognizable here as the devil-may-care Byeong-woo, but does manage to hint at layers beneath the surface.
Derek Elley, Variety, Oct 5 2008
Korea’s hottest actors Jeon Do-youn and Ha Jung-woo display fabulous rapport.
Ha Jung-woo, who terrifies as a psychopath in “The Chaser,” is effortlessly convincing as the lovable louse that women love to hate.
Maggie Lee, Hollywood Reporter, Oct 5 2008
On the surface, his shameless parasitic character seems to be an extension of the swindling host he played in “The Moonlight of Seoul.” But the actor employs hyperrealism complete with sleepy eyes and a rhythmic bounce in his walk to craft a completely new personality.
Lee Hyo Won, Korea Times, Sep 18 2008
The Chaser
Jung-woo Ha’s Young-min is just as riveting. He is blase, almost robot-like when he commits his crimes, but watch the way his seemingly feigned abstraction starts to slip away in a scene where he is left alone in the police station with a woman policeman, and again, more violently, when a psychiatrist begins probing. He is a creepy close relative of the hypnotist Mamiya in Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Cure.
Bangkok Post, Sep 05 2008
I can’t say enough to praise Kim without recognizing the acting talents of Ha Jung-woo as the frustrating and sickening antagonist. So many moments of me cursing and turning my head away in horror whilst watching the movie was due to Ha.
speedpop@NeoGAF, July 6 2008
Meanwhile, Jung-woo Ha as the unstable killer gives an amazingly nuanced performance. You wont get any of the over-acting found with most serial killer performances. The normalcy that Jung-woo Ha brings to Young-min’s psychotic character feels entirely unnerving because he could be any of the “normal” guys you see walking on the streets.
Lunapark6, June 29 2008
HA Jung-woo’s acting of a serial killer who repeats the murders he himself can’t understand while he smiles with a sweet glow shows his highly destructive power.
EUH So-woong, Chosun Daily, Feb 15 2008
HA Jung-woo breaks down to a serial killer who is frightening and despising enough to curse at. This is more than enough to show his passion and for us to praise him for it. In THE CHASER, HA Jung-woo indulges in committing murders without a blink of the eye and with an indifferent face. With not even a single bit of remorse, he portrays a psychopath who has no feelings whatsoever. Also, he may look like an innocent child but then suddenly he lets out a furious rage and puts the audience at the end of their seats. Those who have seen the film has said, “Korea’s best murderer has been born,”and praised HA Jung-woo for his acting.
HONG Jung-won, News N, Feb 22 2008
Ha Jeong-woo (”Never Forever“), whom renowned director Martin Scorsese had praised as having “as much potential as Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon”, brazenly displays an animalistic instinct for acting. He is both passively aggressive and “aggressively passive” as the enigmatic murderer.
Lee Hyo Won, Korea Times, Jan 31 2008
The Moonlight of Seoul
Ha gives yet another gripping performance, offering more of that animalistic acting instinct in his recent box office smash “The Chaser.”
Lee Hyo Won, Korea Times, Apr 24 2008
Ha is now the most sought-after film star following the runaway success of “The Chaser,” a thriller that further showcases the actor’s passionate acting spirit.
Ha Jung-woo’s nuanced performance occasionally lightens up the otherwise depressingly static storyline.
Yang Sung Jin, Koreaherald, Apr 21 2008
Never Forever
As Jihah, popular Korean newcomer Ha (”The Unforgiven”) manages the tricky job of connecting with Farmiga in an English-language performance that requires him to stay emotionally guarded.
Justin Chang, Variety, Jan 26 2007
Jihah played with a perfect mix of frustration, slyness, and befuddlement by Ha Jung Woo
Jason Ferguson, Metro Times, Sep 10 2008
Time
It’s a great wonder that the actors can keep such tricky material afloat. Ha Jung-woo comes off extremely realistic as the typically nagged boyfriend early on and then subtly brokenhearted later.
FILM-FORWARD.COM, July 13 2007
The film’s three lead performances, by Mr. Ha as Ji-woo and by Ms. Seong and Ms. Park as the two incarnations of his lover, are fearlessly honest, so attuned to contemporary anxieties about sex, love and social status that the characters’ unhappiness is as squirm-inducing as the movie’s close-ups of sliced flesh.
