Moncrieff’s The Dead Girl takes Deauville Grand Prize

Karen Moncrieff’s The Dead Girl has taken the grand prize at The Deauville Festival of American Film. The jury prize at the Normandy event went to Gina Kim’s Never Forever. Both directors delivered emotional acceptance speeches with Kim noting that she had suffered a period of self doubt following Never Forever ’s unveiling in Sundance earlier this year.
The film had immediately been picked up for French distribution, she explained, had failed immediately to attract a US buyer. To add to the festival joy, the film has now found a domestic distributor at Toronto – a co-deal between Arts Alliance America and Prime Entertainment.
Joining Kim on the stage was the film’s lead actress Vera Farmiga who noted that she was grateful to the festival for having enabled her to be cast by Kim – Farmiga’s breakthrough role came in 2004’s Down To The Bone which had been in competition in Deauville . . . . .

Interviewer : You have strong and broad shoulders!
Ha : I could not show in the previous works. Owing to roles I played, I had to hide. But, at this time, wearing suit in the drama H.I.T. makes me show off broad shoulders.

The first female director we’ll introduce is Gina Kim, the director of ‘Never Forever.’ ‘Never Forever,’ the first joint production between Korea and the U.S., is about a dangerous relationship between a woman desperate to conceive a baby in hopes of saving her marriage and a man desperate for money in order to bring his lover to America.
Vera Farmiga stars as Sophie, an American woman who offers money to Korean immigrant worker, Jahad, played by Ha Jung-Woo, in return for a sexual encounter. However, their clandestine relationship, that Sophie calls, ‘just business,’ develops into an unexpected love. Although director Gina Kim had to work with an American production crew under a tight budget and strict Union rules, ‘Never Forever,’ which was released in late June has won great critical acclaim for its realistic portrayal of a woman’s secret desire. ……….
Although films of Korean female directors are not generally big-budgeted or action-filled, they are not only winning the hearts of audiences but also expanding the horizons of Korean cinema. Today, we have introduced you to Korea’s prominent female directors who have created the wave of changes in the Korean film industry.
